ARLINGTON - After losing the first of two games in Saturday's doubleheader, Texas State responded with a 2-0 shutout win to knock off Jill Garro and the Texas-Arlington Mavericks and clinch its fifth consecutive series win.

With the win, Texas State improves to 16-2 in Southland Conference play and remains three games up of Texas-San Antonio for first place.

Texas State has now reached the 30-win plateau for the seventh time in the school's 20-year softball history.

The Bobcats got going early, plating a run in the top of the first for the early 1-0 lead thanks to two Maverick errors.

Amy Hromadka reached base on a one-out walk, moved to second on a Kristin Gunter groundout and scored a batter later on a throwing error by the second baseman, Jenna Fortune.

With two outs in the inning and Katie Ann Trahan safe at first on the error, another UTA error allowed Alex Newton to reach base safely. Garro and her infield would settle down to record the final out in the inning and not allow any more damage.

The `Cats would add a little insurance in the top of the seventh. After a Karen Taylor leadoff double through the right side, Jill Kloesel recorded her second hit of the game, when she singled down the left field line to score the pinch-runner Koop from third.

For the second time in as many days, the Bobcats held the Mavericks scoreless, as Trahan out pitched Garro by throwing her second one-hit shutout of the weekend series.

Texas State will step out of conference for the last time of the season April 20, taking on Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in a Thursday doubleheader.

The Bobcats will then return home April 22 to host their last home series of the 2006 campaign against the Nicholls State Lady Colonels.
