Box Score
SAN MARCOS -
Luke Cannon went 3-for-3 with six RBIs, four runs scored and two shots over the outfield wall, as Texas State cruised past Dallas Baptist 13-4 Friday at Bobcat Field.
Texas State (18-20) hit three home runs on the night, and senior starter Scott Moore tossed five innings to pick up his sixth win of the season.
DBU (23-14) had three players post two hits, but Patriot pitching gave up seven Bobcat runs in the first two innings of the Texas State win.
The Bobcats jumped on DBU early, as Kyle Jones started the offensive outpouring with a single in the first followed by Cannon's first home run that put the `Cats up 2-0. David Wood would later follow with a solo homer that made the score 3-0.
Drew Holder brought DBU back within two on a solo homer in the second, but Texas State recoiled in the home-half of the inning on Cannon's RBI single to center and a three-run Cody Merrell home run that put the Bobcats up 7-1.
Dallas Baptist would add two runs in the top of the third and another in the top of the fifth to shave the Texas State lead to three runs, but the Patriots handed a run to the `Cats in the bottom of the fifth, as Pat Crumpton stole second and touched two more bases to score on a throwing error by DBU catcher Brandon Bantz to put Texas State ahead 8-4.
Cannon again found himself in scoring position in the seventh, moving across the plate on an RBI fielders' choice by Aaron Garza to give Texas State a 9-4 lead, and Dawid Bednarek singled to open the eighth inning and was moved to second on a Thomas Field sacrifice bunt.
After Cassidy Dresch was hit by a pitch to put runners at first and second, Jones singled through the left side to plate Bednarek and make the score 10-4.
Cannon delivered his final shot of the game with two outs in the eighth, pulling a towering fly ball over the fence in right center for his second homer of the day. Cannon's tenth home run of the season put the Bobcats in front 13-4.
Four Bobcats, including Cannon, produced multiple-hit outings, while Merrell drove in three runs in a 1-for-5 night at the plate. Jones scored three times while going 2-for-4, and Wood finished with a run scored and one RBI in a 2-for-5 offensive performance.
Bednarek went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored, as Texas State won its second straight and fifth of its last six ballgames.
DBU starter Randall Taylor (4-2) took the loss for the Patriots, and despite the win in blow-out fashion for the `Cats, Justin Fiske recorded his fourth save of the year by pitching the final four innings of the contest.
Fiske held DBU scoreless over the final four frames, allowing two hits and no walks while striking out five.
Texas State and Dallas Baptist will close the two-game, non-conference set Saturday in a 1 p.m. contest at Bobcat Field. The game can be heard live on 89.9-FM, KTSW, while live statistics and a live audio feed will be available at www.txstatebobcats.com.
