UH Slips by Texas State, 4-3

HOUSTON - It took a three-set win in the final match of the day for No. 70 Houston to hold on for a 4-3 win over Texas State Saturday at Hoff Courts.

Houston's Sonja Nikolic defeated Sumarie Muller 7-5, 2-6, 6-1 at No. 5 singles to lift the Cougars to the dual win.

Texas State (2-7) won the doubles point and led 2-1 and 3-2 in singles play during the day.

Ashley Ellis and Lainy Chafitz teamed for an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles while Christina Amo and Natalie McLeod posted an 8-6 win at No. 3 doubles to put the Bobcats out in front 1-0.

In singles play, Amo's 6-4, 6-1 win over Sarah Reimer gave Texas State a 2-1 lead in the match. Ellis would put the Bobcats back out in front at 3-2 with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Loli Gomez at No. 1. But Houston would score wins in the final two singles matches for the win.

Vicky Simpson evened the dual score to 3-3 with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 6 against Texas State's Jana Cucciniello before Nikolic scored her win over Muller.

The weekend which included a Friday match against nationally-ranked Rice provides the final tune-up for a Texas State team which opens Southland Conference play Tuesday at Texas-San Antonio.
