SAN MARCOS -
Kyle Jones went 2-for-4 with a run and two RBIs, as Texas State held off Louisiana-Monroe 6-3 Friday at Bobcat Field.
Texas State (13-18, 9-4 SLC) never trailed in the game, plating three runs in the first two innings, while Louisiana-Monroe (4-20, 3-5) dropped its fourth-straight SLC contest in the loss.
The Bobcats jumped on the board in the bottom of the first, opening with a Cassidy Dresch lead-off walk. Dresch then moved to third on a two-base wild pitch, followed by a hard-chopped ground ball by Jones that got into left field to put Dresch across the plate.
Texas State went up 2-0 when Jones scored on a fielders' choice, sacrifice bunt by Elliott Babcock.
Bobcat starter Scott Moore (4-3) controlled the middle innings to pick up his fourth win of the season, allowing all three ULM runs in 6.1 innings pitched. Moore struck out eight Indian batters.
ULM posted its first run in the sixth, as Andy Jones led off with a triple to right center. Jones crossed the plate two batters later, when Brent Bowman hit a ground ball to Thomas Field at short, cutting the Texas State lead to 3-1.
The Bobcats would answer in the bottom of the sixth, starting the inning with a Casey Guest lead-off walk and a Field hit-by-pitch that put runners at first and second.
Guest reached third base when Dresch put down a bunt which was fielded by Bowman, the ULM first baseman. Bowman's throw pulled third baseman Steve Lawler off of the bag, leaving the bases loaded on the sacrifice fielders' choice.
A wild pitch plated Guest from third and left runners in scoring position, followed by a sacrifice fly by Jones that scored Field and put the `Cats on top 5-1. Texas State finished its sixth-inning rally with a Luke Cannon RBI single, scoring Dresch and putting the Bobcats on top 6-1.
Cannon finished with a 2-for-5, one-RBI outing, snapping a two-game hitless streak for the Bobcat senior
ULM managed to put two runs on the board in the seventh, scoring on Ben Soignier's two-RBI double, but David Wood and Justin Fiske combined to pitch the final 2.2 innings to shut down the late-inning ULM threat.
Fiske earned his second save of the year by pitching a scoreless ninth inning.
ULM starter Daniel Roberts took the loss, dropping his record to 0-4 on the year, while the ULM offense was led by Soignier, who drove in two in a 1-for-4 performance.
Field was the only other Bobcat with a multiple-hit outing, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
Texas State and Louisiana-Monroe will continue the series Saturday, with first pitch slated for 3 p.m.
