SAN MARCOS -
Louie Alamia went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI while UTPA starter Chad Linder tossed seven innings to beat Texas State 4-1 Tuesday at Bobcat Field.
Texas-Pan American (12-17) jumped on Bobcat starter Jarod Garza early, as Alamia scored on an RBI double by first baseman Zach Smith.
The Broncs added another run in the fourth on a Kyle Perry balk.
Texas State (11-14) answered in the bottom of the fourth, opening the inning with singles from Kyle Jones and Luke Cannon.
Cannon would later steal second on an attempted double-steal in which Jones was gunned down at third. Cannon later scored from second base to make the score 2-1 on a throwing error by UTPA catcher Brady Honeycutt.
Honeycutt's errant throw to first was in attempt to put out David Wood, who reached on an infield single that was lined off of the leg of the UTPA pitcher.
UTPA plated one more run in the fifth, starting with a one-out wild-pitch strike out that put Jason Buhagiar on first base.
T.J. Gilmer then put down a sacrifice bunt that moved Buhagiar to second, and the UTPA centerfielder crossed the plate when Alamia laced a single through the middle to put the Broncs on top 3-1.
Texas-Pan American added an insurance run in the eighth, as Alamia scored for the second time on Patrick Brooks' single into right center. Brooks advanced to second on the throw to the infield, which was cut off by Wood and fired to Dawid Bednarek at the plate to gun down Osiel Flores, who was attempting to score from second.
Texas State was retired in order in the ninth to close the UTPA three-run win.
Jones recorded his fifth-straight multi-hit game with a 2-for-4 outing, while Cannon extended his season-long hitting streak to 15 games while scoring the only Bobcat run of the day.
Bobcat pitchers combined to strike out ten Bronc batters, led by Perry's four strike outs on the night. UTPA closer Tim Haines delivered the final three outs for UTPA to pick up his team-leading fifth save of the season.
Garza took the loss in his first decision of the season, while Linder picked up his first win of the year in the seven-inning performance. The series continues Wednesday with a 3 p.m. game in San Marcos.
