SAN MARCOS -
Texas State improved to 5-0 at home and 4-1 in Southland Conference play on Wednesday night, downing Sam Houston State in a doubleheader at Bobcat Field.
Texas State scored eight runs on 16 hits, while holding the Bearkats to only three runs on the evening.
In the first game of the afternoon, the Bobcats (17-11, 4-1 SLC) used a three-run fourth and two early defensive double plays to top the `Kats 3-1 and send them to their first conference loss of the season.
Ashton Peters broke the scoreless tie in the fourth, with a solo shot to left center field that gave Texas State the 1-0 lead.
With one out in the inning and Jetta Weinheimer safe at first on a fielder's choice, Amy Hromadka reached base when the Sam Houston State shortstop, Tanya Hooser tried to gun Weinheimer out at second and the ball sailed into left field. Weinheimer would score all the way from first on the arrant throw and Hromadka would advance safely to third.
A batter later, Amy Krueger improved her hitting-streak to seven games, when she sent a line drive into right field that scored Hromadka to make the score 3-0.
The Bearkats would pick up a late run in the top of the seventh but it was not enough, as the Bobcats took the first game 3-1.
Katie Ann Trahan scattered six hits and struck out seven batters to record her 10th win of the season.
In the nightcap, Texas State did most of its damage in the top of the first, when they sent 10 batters to the plate and put four runs on the scoreboard.
Sam Houston State threatened right back in the top of the second. Whitney Heath sent a screaming double into right field, but a textbook relay from Krueger to Ryan Kos to Ashton Peters denied the Bearkats a run.
With a runner on second and two outs in the inning, a single and a walk loaded the bases. Sarah Lancour played it cool, forcing Megan Beard to keep the ball in the infield as Ryan Kos snagged the ball right before it touched the dirt for the third out, conserving the 4-0 lead.
The Texas State lead was 5-0 in the top of the sixth, until Sam Houston State used back-to-back doubles from Heath and Sarah Parich and a single from Kara Reeves, to cut the lead to 5-2.
Lancour and the Bobcats retired four of the final five batters to sweep the doubleheader. Lancour allowed two runs while striking out five en route to her seventh victory of the year.
Texas State and Sam Houston State will take the field at 1 p.m. tomorrow to conclude the three-game set.
