HONOLULU -
Senior pitcher Katie Ann Trahan recorded the 12th shutout of her career and the Bobcats cruised to a 9-0 win over Southern Mississippi in the opening round of the Oceanic Time Warner Cable Hawaii Paradise Classic on Thursday.
The contest only lasted five innings as the Bobcats run-ruled the Golden Eagles.
The Bobcats scored a run in the first three innings along with three in the fourth and fifth on their way to victory.
The Bobcats got going early on offense with a lead-off walk from Amy Hromadka. Two batters later Kristen Gunter doubled to left center and Hromadka advanced to third. A sacrifice fly from Trahan put the Bobcats on the board first.
In the bottom of the first, the Bobcats seemed a little nervous on defense and allowed the Golden Eagles' lead-off hitter to advance to second on an error. After a sacrifice bunt moved the runner to third, the Bobcats calmed down and got out of the inning on two consecutive pop-ups.
If there is one thing to say about the Bobcats' season-opener, it would be that they were consistent on both sides of the ball. Along with that, every player stepped onto the field and contributed their part in the win.
The leadership of the three seniors Hromadka, Gunter and Trahan was in full effect as they combined to hit 6-for-8 from the plate with four RBIs.
Trahan also had a great night on the mound, striking out seven and walking two in her first shutout of the season.
The play of sophomore Ashton Peters was solid as she had six putouts to go along with a 2-for-3, two RBI night at the plate.
Freshman Alex Newton went 2-for-3 in her first game in a Bobcat uniform and showed that she has no problem fitting in at the collegiate level.
Texas State will take the field tomorrow in a double-header. They will face Loyola Marymount at 2 p.m. and conclude the afternoon against BYU at 4 p.m.
