Lamar senior forward Alan Daniels scored 29 points, including 22 in the first half, as the Cardinals defeated Texas State 83-71 Wednesday in the Montagne Center.
The Cardinals connected on four of their first five three-point attempts and made eight three-pointers in the opening half in building a 45-21 lead at the break. Daniels connected for two of the Cards' first four triples and knocked down a total of four in the first half. He entered the game averaging just over 23 points an outing.
With the win, Lamar began the second half of the Southland Conference season by improving to 13-9 and 6-3 in SLC play. Texas State dropped to 2-18 and 0-9.
With its early performance from three-point range, Lamar built a 12-0 lead before Charles Dotson's fast-break layin over six minutes into the game broke the Bobcats' opening scoreless spell.
Dotson, the Bobcats' leading scorer, was held to seven points. Jason Rogers scored a career-high 23 to lead Texas State while Trevor Cook scored 14 and blocked four shots before fouling out with 6:09 to play. Freshman Dylan Moseley saw his most extensive playing time of the season and responded with eight points and 12 rebounds in 23 minutes of work.
Texas State junior Jushay Rockett did not travel with the team for disciplinary reasons. He has started 15 games this season for the Bobcats.
Blake Whittle added 17 points for Lamar. He scored 11 in the first half on 5-for-10 shooting.
Lamar shot 46 percent from the floor on the night, including an even 50 percent in the first half. After an 8-for-20 performance from three-point range in the first half, the Cardinals attempted just four shots from behind the arc in the second half. Texas State shot 32 percent for the game, including 21 percent in the first half.
Texas State returns home Saturday to play host to a McNeese State team which enters the week in second place in the Southland Conference.
