Texas State Drops 8-4 Decision to Gonzaga

EDINBURG - Gonzaga senior outfielder Jackson Brennan belted a leadoff homer to begin the game and the Bulldogs scored five runs in the middle innings en route to an 8-4 win over Texas State on the second day of the UTPA Baseball Classic Saturday.

With the win, Gonzaga improved to 2-1 while Texas State dropped to 0-2 heading into Sunday's 6 p.m. game with host Texas-Pan American. The Bobcats opened the season Friday with a 7-6 loss to Oklahoma.

Texas State matched Gonzaga run for run in the first and third innings.

Heath Keel went 3-for-5 in the game to lead the Bobcats. He hit a two out single in the bottom of the first and advanced to second then third on a pair of stolen bases before scoring on a wild pitch.

Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the third, Texas State manufactured another run. Pat Crumpton singled, moved to second on a pass ball and on to third when Thomas Field grounded out to second. Crumpton would score on a sacrifice fly to centerfield by Cassidy Dresch.

Gonzaga broke the game open with three runs in the fourth and added two runs in the fifth. Zach Woodward drove in runs in both the fourth and fifth innings with a pair of triples as the Bulldogs built a 7-2 lead.

Texas State would score two in the bottom of the seventh on RBI base hits by Keel and Kyle Jones before Gonzaga got back one of the runs in the top of the eighth.

Gonzaga starter Bobby McEwen scattered 11 hits over seven innings to pick up the win. Texas State junior transfer Dan Donaldson was saddled with the loss, giving up five hits and five runs through the first four innings.
