Box Score
SAN MARCOS -
Scott Moore threw five innings of one-hit, one-run baseball and David Wood went 3-for-4 with a home run, an RBI and a run scored, as Texas State improved to 3-5 with a 7-1 win over Prairie View A&M Sunday at Bobcat Field.
The game was to be the first in a Sunday double-header between the Bobcats and Panthers, but game two was postponed due to cold temperatures in Central Texas. Game two has not yet been rescheduled.
Prairie View (8-2) put the first notch on the board in the first inning when Michael Richard was hit by Moore's full-count offering, and Richard moved to second on a sacrifice bunt.
Richard would move to third on Eugene Edwards' infield single and later would score on Cody Merrell's first passed ball of the season, putting the Panthers up 1-0 at the end of one inning.
Merrell, who made his first start of the season behind the plate, finished the game 1-for-1 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored, but Merrell did reach on all four of his plate appearances after being hit by pitches in the second, sixth and seventh innings.
The scoreboard stayed quiet for the next two innings, and after putting the Panthers down in the top of the fourth, the Bobcats jumped on the scoreboard with three runs to take a two-run lead.
Kyle Jones opened the inning with a one-out bunt single, and after stealing second, Jones crossed the plate on Merrell's RBI single to knot the score at 1-1.
Merrell advanced to second when Prairie View pitcher Matthew Chase bobbled the ball and was charged with an error, bringing Luke Cannon to the plate with one out.
Cannon ripped a single through the right side to score Merrell and later scored when Witek singled to right, moving Cannon to third. Cannon scored from third on the play on Chase's second error of the inning, putting the `Cats on top 3-1 after four.
Elliott Babcock and Aaron Garza were retired to open the Bobcat fifth, but with two outs and no runners on base, Wood hit his first home run in a Bobcat uniform, launching the first pitch of his third-career at bat over the right-center field wall, putting Texas State up 4-1.
The long ball was the second this season by a Bobcat batter and the first of the year at Bobcat Field.
The Bobcats would get two more in the seventh, when Thomas Field scored on Jones' RBI fielders' choice and Garza crossed the plate on a wild pitch.
Texas State scored its seventh and final run in the eighth inning when Jared Bunn crossed the plate on Field's two-out RBI single. Bunn reached on a Prairie View fielding error.
The Bobcats took advantage of five Panther errors on the afternoon, and the `Cats out-hit Prairie View 9-5 in the six-run win. Texas State got RBIs from Field, Wood, Jones, Merrell and Cannon, and seven of the nine Bobcat starters recorded at least one base hit in the game.
Moore finished with the Bobcat win, improving his record to 2-0, and Texas State got scoreless relief innings from Justin Fiske, Jason Baca and B.J. Boening, who recorded the final three outs of the game.
Chase took the loss for the Panthers, tossing only one inning but giving up three runs and four hits in the bottom of the fourth. Edwards led Prairie View at the plate, finishing the game 2-for-4, while Richard scored the only Panther run of the contest.
Texas State is off until Wednesday, when the Bobcats travel to Texas to take on the defending national champion Longhorns in a rare weekday afternoon game at Disch-Falk Field. First pitch is slated for 2:30 p.m. in Austin.
