Lance Burroughs scored a career-high 25 points, including 6-of-8 from three-point range, as Texas State defeated Texas-San Antonio 85-68 Saturday at Strahan Coliseum.
Texas State won for the first time in Southland Conference play this season to improve to 3-21 and 1-11.
UTSA (10-14, 5-8 SLC) turned the ball over 19 times in the loss while the Bobcats gave the ball away only seven times, all in the first half.
Charles Dotson scored 15 points while Chris Langhone and Jushay Rockett each scored 14 points. Rockett also pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.
Five Roadrunners scored in double-figures, including Kyile Byrd, who led the team with 17 points. Abe Donlan scored 12 points, Andre Owens had 11, and both Kurt Attaway and Nkem Ojougboh recorded 10 points apiece.
The Bobcats jumped out to an early 6-0 lead 1:15 into the game on three-pointers from both Trevor Cook and Rockett.
After Rockett connected on another three-point field goal to up the Bobcat lead to 9-4 at 17:34, the Roadrunners scored the next 11 points to give them a 15-9 lead with 15:36 left in the half.
Texas State in turn responded with a 15-0 run that was capped with a layup and subsequent free throw by Dotson that gave the Bobcats a 24-15.
The Roadrunners turned the ball over nine times during the scoring run by the Bobcats, and had 13 turnovers in the first half. The `Cats scored 23 of its 46 first-half points off turnovers.
UTSA went on a 9-0 run to pull to within four with 7:45 left in the half, but the `Cats finished the half on a 22-7 run to take a 46-27 lead at the break.
Burroughs scored 16 of his 25 points in the first half, including shooting 4-of-5 from behind the three-point arc.
The Bobcat victory provided a perfect ending to I-35 Rivalry Day. Earlier in the day, the Texas State women's team came back from a 42-15 halftime deficit to take a 73-71 win in overtime at UTSA.
Texas State returns to action Thursday when they travel to Huntsville for a 7 p.m. tip-off with Sam Houston State. The Bobcats' final home game will be the following week, when they meet SLC-leader Northwestern State on March 1.
