SAN MARCOS -
New Mexico used a Daniel Stovall RBI single to score Matt Foote from second base in the top of the tenth inning, securing a 3-2 win Sunday at Bobcat Field in San Marcos.
Texas State (1-5) used four pitchers in the game, including the first-career appearance for freshman Chris Armijo, who took the loss for the `Cats and dropped his record to 0-1. Quinten Andes earned the win for the Lobos, tossing four innings in relief and improving to 1-0 on the year.
The Lobo tenth started when Foote singled up the middle and Chris Carlson was hit by Armijo's 1-1 offering, and after Mike Hart came on to relieve Armijo, Stovall ripped Hart's fifth pitch into left, scoring the game-winning run.
Andes put the `Cats away in order in the bottom of the tenth, securing the series win for New Mexico.
New Mexico (3-1) scored its first run in the top of the first inning when Stovall doubled to bring home Carlson, and the Lobos put another run on the board in the sixth when Jordan Pacheco scored on an RBI infield single to short by Carlson.
The Lobos had a chance to add to the lead in the top of the eighth inning, when Pacheo drew a lead-off walk and Carlson followed with a one-out intentional pass.
Third baseman Ian Hollick then beat out an infield single to load the bases, but Bobcat reliever Jarod Garza coaxed Lobo catcher Drew McDonald into an inning-ending infield pop-up, leaving three on to end the Lobo eighth.
After a scoreless Bobcat eighth and a minimum ninth for the Lobos, Texas State got a single from Cody Ross to lead off the bottom of the ninth.
Kyle Jones popped up on the infield to record the inning's first out, but Heath Keel ripped a one-out, 2-2 offering from Andes through the right side, placing Ross at second.
Both runners moved up a base on a wild pitch, and Cody Merrell then lifted a 1-2 pitch over the head of the Lobo third baseman, scoring both Ross and Keel to tie the game. Dawid Bednarek came to the plate but flied out to end the inning, forcing extra innings for the second-straight day in the series.
Lobo starter Danny Ray Herrera threw six innings without giving up a run, and the Lobo lefty struck out five in his second appearance of the year. Texas State starter Dan Donaldson tossed 5.2 innings in the game, finishing with four strike outs and two runs surrendered.
Merrell finished the day 2-for-2 at the plate with a walk and two RBIs, while Ross also had a two-hit day going 2-for-4 with a run scored. Keel was the only other Bobcat to record a hit in a 1-for-4 day at the plate with a run scored.
Stovall paced New Mexico at the plate, finishing 2-for-5 with two RBIs, while Pacheco, Foote and Carlson each finished with a hit and a run scored in the Lobos' third win of the year.
Texas State continues its non-conference slate Tuesday with its second-straight opponent from the Mountain West Conference, when the Bobcats travel to TCU for an in-state mid-week showdown with the Horned Frogs. First pitch is slated for 7 p.m. at Lupton Stadium in Fort Worth.
