Bobcats Advance to Semifinals

HONOLULU, Hawaii - The Bobcats split a pair on Saturday, beating in-state rival Texas-Arlington 3-1 in eight innings and falling to tournament-host Hawaii 2-1, in the third round of the Oceanic Time Warner Cable Hawaii Paradise Classic.

In the first game of the afternoon, neither team could manage a run until the eighth inning when freshman Alex Newton got the Bobcats on the scoreboard with a 2-run double to center field that scored Amy Hromadka and Ali McCormack.

The `Cats added another run on a Karen Taylor single down the third base line that scored Jill Kloesel and gave the Bobcats a 3-0 lead.

In the bottom half of the inning, UTA cut the lead to 3-1 when Autumn Petrino singled to right field, scoring Adika Snider.

The Bobcat defense stood their ground and forced UTA into consecutive fly outs, ending the game with the Bobcats on top, 3-1.

Sarah Lancour improved her record to 1-1 on the year, pitching eight strong innings and striking out 13 batters.

In the second game of the afternoon against Hawaii, the Bobcats knotted the game at 1-1 in the sixth when Jill Kloesel scored off pitcher Justine Smethurst's throwing error.

The Rainbows, however put the game out of reach in the bottom of the sixth when Tanisha Milca singled to left field and scored Kaulana Gould, making the final score 2-1.

The Bobcats will play as the No. 3 seed in Sunday's semifinal match-up at 5 p.m. against the winner of the Hawaii and Loyola Marymount game.

The winner of the 5 p.m. game will advance to play in the championship game at 7 p.m.
