Bobcats Open Davalos Era with 106-65 Win

SAN MARCOS - Matt Fullenwider scored 25 points and Charles Dotson grabbed nine rebounds, as Texas State placed four players in double figures on the way to a 106-65 exhibition win over NCAA Division III foe Texas Lutheran Tuesday at Strahan Coliseum.

The win marked the first exhibition contest under first-year head coach Doug Davalos, who will lead the `Cats into regular-season battle against Dallas Baptist on Friday at 8 p.m.

Brandon Bush added 18 points in the game, while Brent Holder scored 14 and Dotson chipped in 12 to help Texas State to the 41-point victory. The Bobcats held a 66-50 edge on the boards, and Texas State forced 34 Bulldog turnovers in the game. The Bobcat defense also came up with 15 steals on the night.

TLU was led by 14 points from Nate Walton, and the Bulldogs were 18-of-46 from the field. The Bobcats finished 43.9 percent from the floor on 41-of-94 shooting, and the `Cats were 19-of-33 from the foul line including 7-of-8 from Bush and 6-of-8 from Fullenwider.

The Bobcats opened with the game's first nine points, capping the 9-0 run with a Bush lay-up at the 17:00 mark in the first half, and Texas State extended the lead to 11-1 on a Dotson jumper with 16:10 to play.

Holder put the `Cats up 29-16 with a three at the 9:32 mark, and Dylan Moseley extended the lead to 20 at the 5:22 mark with a lay-up that made the score 42-22.

Holder had back-to-back baskets in the next two possessions to put Texas State up 46-22, and Bush pushed the lead to 56-30 in the half's final minute with a lay-up with 42 seconds to play.

After TLU opened the second half with a three to cut the lead to 56-34, Texas State rolled off the next six points, going up 62-34 on a Fullenwider lay-up with 18:32 to play. Fullenwider put the Bobcats up 65-35 with a jumper at the 17:44 mark, and the lead pushed past 40 with another Fullenwider jumper at the 13:35 mark that made the score 80-39.

Antwon Williams made the score 91-47 with a jumper at the 9:49 mark, and a Dotson jumper with 6:41 to go put the lead at 95-56. The Bobcats broke the 100-point barrier on Chris Agwumaro's free throws with 4:26 to play, and Texas State finished the half on a 6-5 run to close the game and earn the 41-point win.

Of Texas State's 66 boards, 39 came on the offensive glass, and the Bobcat backcourt provided 22 assists, five of which belonged to Antwoine Blanchard.

Five players finished with two blocks each, as the Bobcats totaled 11 blocks as a team.

Fullenwider finished the night with five of his eight rebounds on the offensive glass, while Dotson, Bush and Williams grabbed four each on the offensive square. Dotson finished with the team rebounding lead, grabbing nine in the game.
