Box Score
SAN MARCOS -
Kelly Fletcher had a career best 27 kills while Kacey Wimpy had a match-high 36 digs, but the Bobcats could not compete with a trio of SFA defenders that topped 20 digs, as the Bobcats fell to the Ladyjacks 3-1 Saturday at Strahan Coliseum.
Wimpy's dig total tied Texas State's single-match record for digs, which is also held by Lucretia Hamilton against Sam Houston State in the 1995 season.
Texas State (13-15, 9-5) hit .226 as a team and five Bobcats found double figures in kills, but SFA (25-3, 14-0) produced 104 team digs led by 31 from libero Stephanie Figgers. The Bobcats narrowly missed a defensive record of their own, coming up with 140 team digs, one shy of the 141 put up against Texas-Arlington in 2004.
Down 2-0 entering game three, the Bobcats used an early 6-0 run to erase a 3-1 Ladyjack lead, going up 7-3 on one of Fletcher's seven kills in the game. The Bobcats extended the lead to seven on a Karry Griffin solo block at 14-7, and after an SFA block got the Jacks back to within five at 21-16, Texas State went on a 5-0 run that included two SFA errors and a Griffin kill that put Texas State on top 26-16.
A Bobcat rotation error put SFA back within eight at 26-18, but the `Cats finished on a 4-1 run to win the game 30-19 and cut the match lead to 2-1.
SFA would bounce back, however, going on a 4-0 run that turned a 12-11 lead into a 16-11 lead through the middle of the game. A Fletcher kill cut SFA's lead to two at 24-22, but the Ladyjacks posted two of the final three points to win the game and the match with the 30-27 victory.
Stephen F. Austin arrived at its early 2-0 match lead with wins of 30-23 and 34-32 in the first two games, starting with the three first points of the match with Figgers at the service line. A second 3-0 Ladyjack clip put SFA on top 9-5, and the Ladyjacks looked to break the game open on a Bobcat error that made the score 17-9.
Texas State fought back to get within five, capping a 3-0 run when Jessica Weynand made the score 17-12 on a kill, but a 4-0 SFA run put the Ladyjacks up 25-17 with only five points standing between the Jacks and a game one win.
Fletcher put the Bobcats back within six with a kill that made the score 27-21, but SFA scored on three of the final five serves to win 30-23.
Game two went back-and-forth with Texas State grabbing a 17-16 lead on back-to-back Lawrencia Brown kills, but a Lauren Railey ace regained the advantage for SFA at 25-24. Brown again put Texas State on top 27-26 with a kill, and consecutive kills by Collins erased an SFA run and tied the game at 28-28.
Fletcher posted a point late that put Texas State up 32-31, but three-straight Bobcat errors, including the first of two rotation errors in the match, gave SFA the final three points to win the game 34-32.
Railey led the Ladyjacks with 17 kills in a match that saw six double-doubles, including five on the Bobcat side of the net. Stephen F. Austin out blocked Texas State 14-10 in the win, and the Ladyjacks stayed unbeaten at 14-0 in league play.
Texas State concludes the regular season on the road next week, traveling to Texas-San Antonio Thursday before going to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday for a 3 p.m. first serve with the Islanders. First serve in Thursday's match in San Antonio is scheduled for 7 p.m.
