SAN MARCOS -
No. 5 seed Texas State posted its second-straight upset on Day 2 of the Southland State Farm Conference Tournament, eliminating No. 1 seed Southeastern Louisiana, the regular-season champions, 2-1 in overtime Thursday at the Bobcat Soccer Complex.
Freshman Andrea Seledee scored both Bobcat goals, including the game-winner in overtime, and senior goalie Paige Perriraz made six saves to stifle the Lions offense.
"What an exciting game," Texas State Head Coach Kat Conner said. "On the game winning goal, we were lucky to have a lot of numbers around the net, to get the game winner."
The match went scoreless for the first 23 minutes thanks to a foul on the Lions. In the 22nd minute Southeastern Louisiana's Janae Sheldon had a goal negated when she was called for a hand ball after beating Bobcat goalie Paige Perriraz.
Texas State then got a goal that counted in the 25th minute when Andrea Seledee gave the Bobcats a 1-0 lead on a rebound off a corner kick. The Bobcats took their lead into halftime.
In the second half, Southeastern refused to quit and got some help from Texas State's Delayna Spivey, who scored an own goal to tie the game in the 53rd minute. The ball deflected off Spivey and into the top corner on a Lions corner kick the Texas State senior midfielder was trying to clear.
"She apologized for that goal after the game," Conner said.
However, with less than one minute remaining in the overtime session, Seledee netted her second goal of the match, and the game-winner, with Kim Phillips and Rikki Padia assisting on the goal.
Lions goalie Holly Moran, who entered the match in the 87th minute after All-SLC First Team member Crista Wood left the match with an injury, couldn't save the day for Southeastern.
"I don't know if that helped us," Conner said. "We were just able to get it in the net."
Texas State finished with a 22-11 edge in shots.
"It's a disappointing way to end the season," Southeastern Louisiana Head Coach Blake Hornbuckle said. "Texas State's record does not indicate how good they are. I'm proud of our season and our players."
The two goals given up by Southeastern Louisiana doubled the total of opponents goals from the entire SLC regular season, where the Lions went 5-0-3 and allowed just two goals in those eight games.
Texas State will now look to avenge at 1-0 loss in the regular season to McNeese State, who knocked off No. 3 seed Stephen F. Austin before beating No. 2 seed Texas-San Antonio. Kamryn Koch scored the game winner for the Cowgirls.
Sunday's 2006 Southland Conference Tournament Final will start at 1 p.m. Tickets are $6 and may be purchased at the gate of the Bobcat Soccer Complex. For more information on the entire tournament so far, go to www.southland.org.
