Texas State Tops Alcorn State, 77-71

SAN MARCOS - Texas State's Brandon Bush scored 18 points and had a key offensive to stop an Alcorn State run as the Bobcats snapped a four-game losing streak with a 77-71 win Wednesday.

Texas State improved to 2-4 with their first win since its season opener earlier in the month. Alcorn State remained winless at 0-7.

Alcorn State was led to Delvin Thompson who shot 8-for-15 from the field and made 10-of-13 free throws en route to a 26-point night. Thompson also had five steals and two assists for the Braves.

Alcorn State went on an 11-4 run in the second half to cut Texas State's lead to 66-65 with 3:59 to play. The two teams traded turnovers before Bush came up with a key offensive board that led to a three-pointer by Brent Holder to stretch the Bobcats' lead to 69-65 with 2:35 to play.

A Thompson turnover would lead to a Charles Dotson fast-break layin for the Bobcats to give Texas State a 71-65 lead with 2:16 to play.

Alcorn State would cut the lead in half when Thompson dribbled inside and launched a shot that Dotson swatted away. The Bobcats were called for goaltending and Thompson converted the free throw to make it a three-point game with 1:18 to play.

Texas State would turn the ball over the next time down the floor. Thompson would again draw contact going inside against the Bobcats. There would be no call and Holder came up with the rebound with 48 seconds to play.

Alcorn State would miss on four of their final five shots in the game's last minute while Texas State converted on six of their final 10 free throw attempts to pick up the win.

Texas State shot 56 percent from the field in the second half after connecting on just 33 percent of its shots in the first half. Four of Texas State's five starters scored in double figures. Matt Fullenwider finished 12 points, Antwoine Blanchard scored 11 and Holder added 10 for the Bobcats.

Juan Wyatt chipped in 12 points and had nine rebounds for Alcorn State.

Texas State returns to action Saturday when the Bobcats travel to Baylor. Alcorn State continues a Texas road swing Saturday at Sam Houston State.
