With the score tied at the end of the first half, North Texas came out of intermission and went on a 17-4 run to start the half en route to a 95-77 win over Texas State Saturday in the Super Pit.
The Mean Green was led by Michael Sturns, who scored 17 points, including a 10-for-11 performance at the line. In fact, UNT went to the free throw line 42 times, converting 31 of their attempts (73.8 percent). Texas State was 13-17 from the line (76.5 percent). The Bobcats were whistled for 30 fouls compared to UNT's 16.
With the win, UNT improved to 5-1 while Texas State fell to 1-4. Texas State returns home Wednesday to play host to Alcorn State in the second game of a double-header with the Bobcat women who take on Huston-Tillotson at 5:30 p.m.
The loss overshadowed a career night for sophomore Dylan Moseley who scored 16 points, including 11 in the first half. Charles Dotson also scored 16 points and pulled down a team-high six rebounds for the Bobcats. Matt Fullenwider added 11 points for the `Cats, nine of which came in the first half.
The outside shooting of Moseley and Brent Holder helped erase an early first-half lead by the Mean Green.
UNT led 19-11 before Moseley hit a three-pointer to start a 12-0 run that put the Bobcats out in front 23-19. Brent Holder added a pair of treys before Moseley canned another bomb to bookend the run. Moseley entered the game 0-for-6 for his career from three-point range. He was 3-for-6 from behind the arc in the first half, finishing the period with 11 points, which surpassed his career high of eight points from his freshman season.
Texas State would lead by as many as six points in the first half as Moseley hit his third, three-point basket at the 5:23 mark to give the Bobcats a 34-28 lead.
UNT would outscore the `Cats 12-6 to end the half, including a 7-2 advantage in the final minute. Rich Young would can a three-pointer for the Mean Green to cut a Texas State lead to 38-36. Harold Edwards would score down low to tie the game.
Antwoine Blanchard's two free throws with six seconds to play would give Texas State a 40-38 lead but Michael Sturns would answer with a pair from the line with two seconds left. In all, North Texas converted on 16-of-23 first-half free throw attempts. Texas State would go to the line just six times, converting five.
