After trailing by 21 in the first half, Texas State cut the Gents' lead to as few as five points in the final minutes of the second period but could not get any closer as Centenary made 6-of-8 free throws at one point down the stretch.
With the loss, Texas State dropped to 1-1. The Bobcats travel to Texas-Pan American on Saturday. Brent Holder helped cut Centenary's lead to single digits when he hit a three-pointer, stole the ensuing in-bound and scored again on a layup to narrow the Gents' lead to 60-53 with just under 13 minutes to play. Holder would have a hand in another Centenary turnover on their next inbounds but Antwon Williams missed a pair of free throws that would have cut the lead to five points.
Centenary would extend the lead back to double digits and hold a comfortable lead until the final five minutes. The Bobcats would connect on 5-of-6 free throws before Bush drilled a three-pointer to cut Centenary's lead to 82-77 with 3:27 to play.
After a missed Gent shot and a Texas State turnover, Larry Logan would score on a layin to give Centenary an 84-77 lead with 2:29 to play. And a missed three-pointer by Antwoine Blanchard would give the ball back to the Gents.
Texas State struggled out of the gate and faced early foul troubles.
The Bobcats converted on just three of their first 13 field goal attempts. Texas State ended up shooting 42 percent from the field while Centenary knocked down 18-of-31 first-half shots.
Both Matt Fullenwider and Brandon Bush picked up their second personal fouls early in the opening half. Bush would have to sit the remainder of the first half after picking up his third personal with 11:19 to play in the period.
