SAN MARCOS -
Double overtime still wasn't enough for Texas State or Southeastern Louisiana to get on the scoreboard as the two teams fought to a scoreless draw Sunday afternoon at the Bobcat Soccer Complex.
The Bobcats' Brittany Beltramini and Southeastern Louisiana's Crista Wood made sure nothing got by either one of them in goal. Both goalies made timely saves on breakaways during the match and frustrated the opposition.
The teams played evenly through the first half and into the second. Texas State tried to mount a rally in the second half, out-shooting Southeastern La. 12-6 for the period, but Wood turned away a Lindsay Tippit attempt and later laid out to stop a shot by Amy Benton to keep the game scoreless.
The Lions had a chance to steal a win on a breakaway in the 88th minute, but SLC scoring leader Danielle Shank was denied by Beltramini. The two had another similar situation in the first overtime, but again Beltramini came out on top with a save.
Fatigue then took its toll during the second overtime as neither team could mount a strong attack. For the entire match Texas State out shot the Lions 19-11, but for both overtime periods the two teams combined for just three shot attempts.
Southeastern Louisiana entered the game with the highest scoring offense in the Southland. It was only the second time the Lions had been shut out during the 2006 season and first time in conference play. Louisiana-Lafeyette also held Southeastern Louisiana to a scoreless draw on Sept. 10.
For Texas State, Beltramini has now gone 288 consecutive minutes without allowing a goal. The last goal allowed by the preseason All-Conference selection was to Sam Houston's Raquel Bueno in the 47th minute in a 1-0 Bobcat loss on Oct. 1. Beltramini played the first half of an 8-0 win over Prairie View A&M and shutout Central Arkansas on Friday before today's match.
The tie gives the Bobcats five points in the conference standings and keeps them among the top six teams with four SLC games left. The top six teams out of the nine in the SLC qualify for the Southland Conference Tournament, which Texas State will host Nov. 2-5 at the Bobcat Soccer Complex.
Texas State will play their final nonconference game on Tuesday when they travel to Lubbock to face Big 12 member Texas Tech. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. The Bobcats will then be back at home on Sunday, Oct. 15, to resume SLC play when they host Nicholls State at 1:00 p.m.
