Karry Griffin had 16 kills and hit a team-best .405, as Texas State rallied back from a 2-0 deficit to beat Texas-San Antonio 3-2 (28-30, 21-30, 30-16, 30-24, 15-11) Thursday at Strahan Coliseum.
Texas State (6-12, 2-2 SLC) was led defensively by Kacey Wimpy and Lawrencia Brown with 15 digs each, and Brown completed her second-straight double-double by adding 14 kills in the five-game win. UTSA (10-9, 3-2) was paced by Connie Picard's 22 kills and Erin McMillan's 30 digs, and Picard led UTSA up front with five blocks, three of which were solos.
Griffin, a San Antonio native, had eight blocks on the night for Texas State, including her first solo stuff of the season which came in game four.
The Roadrunners opened the match with a 30-28 win after erasing an 11-6 Texas State lead with a 10-4 run that tied the opening game at 16-16. Texas State would go back up by four at 25-21, but a second UTSA run, this time a 6-1 spurt, put the Roadrunners in front 27-26.
Texas State gained the next two points to go back on top 28-27, but three-straight UTSA points closed the game for a 1-0 Roadrunner match lead.
Texas-San Antonio exploded into game two, earning an 11-2 lead that quickly turned into a 23-12 advantage as the game moved past its mid-way point. Texas State fought back to shave the Roadrunner lead to single digits at 28-17, but UTSA finished with game point on a Texas State service error that made the score 30-21 and gave the Roadrunners a 2-0 lead in the match.
Texas State turned the tables on UTSA in game three, opening an 11-5 lead that turned into a 19-7 advantage ten serves later on a kill by Kelly Fletcher, who finished the match with 15 kills on 40 attempts.
The `Cats earned the serve for match point on a UTSA service error, and Texas State closed the door with a Brown kill one play later that put the Bobcats on top 30-16 and cut UTSA's match lead to 2-1.
Texas State would even the match in game four, jumping out to a 12-7 lead on a kill by Griffin, but UTSA climbed back into the game, cutting the lead to one at 21-20 on a Brittany Hildebrand kill.
The Roadrunners would once again cut the lead to one, using a Bobcat error to make the score 25-24, but Texas State fired off the next five points to win 30-24 and tie the match at 2-2.
The Bobcats would fall behind 3-1 in game five before using a 4-1 run to take a 5-4 lead with a Griffin kill. The Bobcats outlasted the Roadrunners 3-1 over the next four serves to go up 9-6, and after UTSA got to within two on a Jackie Strauss score, Texas State went on a 3-1 run to go up 14-11 with match-point in hand.
UTSA earned one more point on a kill by Hildebrand, but Texas State closed the match with a Brown slam, running the score to 15-11 and completing the two-game comeback to win 3-2.
Texas State returns to the Strahan floor Saturday, hosting Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 3 p.m. The Bobcats wrap up their four-game homestand next weekend, taking on Lamar and McNeese State Friday and Saturday at the Coliseum.
