NACOGDOCHES - A 3-0 halftime deficit proved too steep to overcome as the Texas State women's soccer team fell 4-2 to Stephen F. Austin in the final regular season game of 2006.

The loss drops the Bobcats (5-12-2, 3-3-2) to fifth place in the Southland Conference standings and a probable first round match-up against Northwestern State in the SLC Tournament.

Stephen F. Austin (9-7-1, 5-2-1) assured themselves of at least the tournament's three seed with the win and could potentially earn a first round bye depending on how Southeastern Louisiana fares on Sunday.

The Ladyjacks built a quick lead, scoring twice within the first 10 minutes of the game against Bobcat freshman goalie Samantha Fraser. Lauren Fricks juked out Fraser in the ninth minute for the game's first goal, and less than a minute later SFA's Amanda Alders scored her SLC-leading 11th goal to double the Ladyjack's lead.

Fricks added one more goal in the 31st minute to give SFA the 3-0 halftime lead.

The Bobcats tried to claw back in the second half, as Reagan McNutt scored her first goal of the season in the 73rd minute and Rikki Padia added another goal in the 82nd to trim the lead to 3-2.

Texas State would get no closer though, as Fricks found Andrea Ramirez with less than two minutes left in the game for the game's final goal and the 4-2 Ladyjacks win.

The Bobcats will now return home and prepare for a short week as the 2006 Southland Conference Tournament begins Nov. 2. The tournament will be hosted by Texas State at the Bobcat Soccer Complex and runs through Sunday, Nov. 5.

Texas State is expected to play at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday in the first of two first round games. Northwestern State is the probable opponent. Texas State beat the Lady Demons 1-0 in overtime last weekend in the final regular season home game for the `Cats.
