Lawrencia Brown had 21 kills to lead three Bobcats in double figures, but Northwestern State held Texas State to .161 hitting in a 3-2 (30-25, 25-30, 30-23, 29-31, 16-14) Demon win Saturday in Natchitoches.
Texas State (9-14, 5-4 SLC) fell for the second-straight time against an SLC East opponent, while Northwestern State (9-11, 4-6) earned its second-straight win over the Bobcats and only its second triumph in the all-time series.
Kelly Fletcher (18) and Amy Weigle (11) joined Brown in double-figures, while Kacey Wimpy had 16 digs to lead three `Cats defensively. Brown also had three solo blocks, an assisted stuff and four aces on the afternoon to total 28.5 points.
NSU was led by Arianne Damasio's 16 kills and Rachel Ford's 27 digs.
Texas State held a late lead in game one, as Karry Griffin put the `Cats on top 22-20, but NSU earned the first game by finishing on a 10-3 run, going up 1-0 in the match with a 30-25 victory.
The Bobcats took game two, using a 9-2 run to turn a 9-8 lead into an 18-10 advantage through the middle of the second frame. NSU fought back to get within four (29-25) on a Bobcat error, but the `Cats took game one on a Fletcher kill to tie the match at 1-1.
The Demons regained the lead in game three, posting for of the first five points and opening a 23-18 lead late in the game. Juliana Abreu put the Demons on top 28-22, and NSU finished the game with a service ace to make the score 30-23.
Texas State edged the Demons in game four to tie the match at 2-2, winning the game 31-29. The Bobcats had to come from behind to stay alive, as NSU opened an 8-3 lead through 11 serves. Texas State rallied back to earn a 29-29 tie, and the Bobcats posted the next two points to win the game 31-29.
The comeback would be thwarted by the Demons, however, as NSU went up 6-2 early in game five before turning in a 16-14 win to end the match.
Texas State returns to the floor Tuesday in the first of five matches at Strahan Coliseum, taking on the SLC West's No. 2 team, Texas-Arlington at 7 p.m. The Bobcats also play Nicholls State and Southeastern Louisiana next weekend in SLC play, marking the middle of the five-match homestand.
