SAN MARCOS -
Kim Phillips scored the first hat trick of the season for a Bobcat, including one goal 34 seconds into the game, to help lead the Bobcats to a 6-1 win over Nicholls State on Sunday afternoon at the Bobcat Soccer Complex.
Nicholls answered with a goal from Jessica Schwartz in the 12th minute, but it was all the Colonels could muster in the game. Phillips answered with her second goal less than a minute later, and Delayna Spivey scored off a header on a free kick from Elyse Ehlinger in the 19th minute as the Bobcats took a 3-1 lead into half time.
Texas State got off to a slow start in the second frame, but turned on the offense by scoring three more times in the final 15 minutes. Phillips completed her hat trick on a penalty kick in the 80th minute when she was tripped in the box. Whitney Bible scored on a header in the 82nd, and Spivey added her second goal off a corner kick in 86th. Brittany Beltramini picked up her fourth win of the season in net, allowing one goal in one half of play.
The win keeps Texas State (4-10-2, 2-1-2) in the thick of the SLC tournament picture with only three regular season games left. For Nicholls (4-11-1, 1-4), the loss means the Colonels must essentially win out to have a good chance to qualify for the Southland tournament, which will be hosted by the Bobcats from Nov. 2-5 at the Bobcat Soccer Complex.
Texas State will now take to the road to face McNeese State on Thursday, Nov. 19, in Lake Charles. The Cowboys went into action today tied for fifth in the conference standings, one spot ahead of Texas State.
Kickoff for Thursday's game will be at 4 p.m.
