SAN MARCOS -
Amy Weigle and Lawrencia Brown had 12 kills each and Karry Griffin chipped in ten, as Texas State downed McNeese State 3-0 (30-25, 30-20, 30-23) Saturday at Strahan Coliseum.
The win was the fourth-straight in SLC play for Texas State (9-12, 5-2), while McNeese State (6-11, 5-2) dropped its second-consecutive match against an SLC West opponent.
Kacey Wimpy led the `Cats defensively for the second-consecutive match, producing 13 digs while Danna Melito recorded ten to reach double-figures in Texas State's first shut-out since Sept. 27, and the first three-game win for the `Cats in conference play this season.
Alyson Jones led McNeese State with a match-high 13 kills, while Lindsay Brooks and Jessica Strama tied for the match-lead with 14 digs. Weigle led Texas State in scoring with 15.5, using six blocks, while McNeese was led on the scoreboard by two players, as Marquita Williams and Jones had 13 points in the match.
Game one began with 18 ties and 21 one-point leads between the two teams. McNeese hopped out to a 10-8 lead on a kill by Jones, and Texas State would not earn the lead until three serves later, when Weigle pounded down a kill to complete back-to-back points that put Texas State on top 11-10.
The `Cats attempted to distance themselves late in the game, when with the score tied at 22-22, Texas State posted back-to-back points on a pair of McNeese State attacking errors. The Cowgirls would get back to within one, however, as Jones made the score 25-24 with a kill, but the score sparked a 3-0 Texas State response, including a Kelly Fletcher kill and a Kacey Wimpy ace that put Texas State on top 28-24.
McNeese notched a point to stop the run, but Texas State finished the game with a Weigle kill to take a 1-0 lead with a 30-25 win.
Texas State poured on the offense in game two, escaping an 11-10 lead with a 7-2 run, when a Brown kill coupled with a McNeese error put Texas State on top 18-12.
The Cowgirls got back to within four at 22-18, but five-straight Bobcat points put the game out of reach, and Weigle finished her second-straight game with a kill, putting Texas State up 2-0 in the match with a 30-20 game-two win.
Texas State fell behind early in game three and then again toward the game's mid-point, as Jones put McNeese on top 15-13 with a kill halfway through the final game.
The Bobcats responded with an 8-2 run to go up 21-17, and Jessica Weynand put the `Cats on top by seven with a kill that made the score 28-21, two points shy of a three-game win. The Bobcats completed the win with two Cowgirl miscues in the final five serves, coming away with a 30-23 win in game three and a 3-0 victory in the match.
Texas State continues conference play next weekend, taking on SLC-newcomer Central Arkansas Thursday and Northwestern State Saturday. The road swing will be Texas State's first to the SLC East this season, and Thursday's first serve is slated for 7 p.m. in Conway, Ark.
