SAN MARCOS - Alan Daniels scored 18 of his game-high 23 points in the second period as Lamar came back from a halftime deficit to beat Texas State 83-58 in the Bobcats' Southland Conference opener Saturday in Strahan Coliseum.

Texas State fell to 2-9 and 0-1 in the SLC with the loss. Lamar, who opened conference play earlier in the week, improved to 8-7 and 1-1 in league play.

Texas State held a 29-25 lead at halftime thanks in part to the hot shooting of Lance Burroughs who connected on 3-of-4 three-pointers and scored 11 points in the first half.

Lamar would outscore the Bobcats 58-29 in the second half to cruise to the win. The Cardinals shot 62 percent from the field in the second half and turned the ball over just three times in the half.

Texas State, which was held to 27 percent shooting from the field in the second period, last led 31-29 before the Cards went on 15-4 run to take a commanding 44-35 lead.

Lamar tied the game at 31-31 at the 18:29 mark and neither team would score for almost two minutes before Daniels gave the Cardinals the lead for good with a dunk at the 16:47 mark. Texas State looked to turn the momentum as Jushay Rockett slammed a dunk to pull the Bobcats to within four, 37-33 before Brandon McThay converted a three-point play at the other end of the floor.

McThay added 14 points and had seven rebounds and five steals. Matthew Barrow scored 17 points and had six assists while Josh Goodwin had a 12-point, 12-rebound double-double off the bench for the Cardinals.

Texas State was led by Burrough's career-high 15 points while Charles Dotson registered his first career double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Texas State returns to action next Thursday when the Bobcats travel to Texas-Arlington. Lamar travels to Stephen F. Austin next Thursday.
