Trevor Cook blocked a school-record seven shots and Charles Dotson led all scorers with 16 points, but Texas-Pan American held Texas State to 26 second-half points and 38.9-percent shooting in a 79-62 win Monday at Strahan Coliseum.
Jushay Rockett joined Dotson in double figures with 13 points, all of which came in the first half. UTPA (5-13) also finished the game with a 39-35 edge on the glass.
Texas State (2-11) took an early 5-3 lead on a Rockett jumper, but UTPA answered the advantage with an 11-3 run that put the Broncs up by six with 14:47 to play in the half.
Brandon Bush nailed a three-point basket with 15:39 on the clock to tie the game at 8-8, but Dexter Shankle hit threes on the Broncs' next two trips to take a 14-8 lead at the 14:47 mark.
Texas State battled back over the next four minutes, gaining a 20-19 lead on a pair of Charles Dotson free throws, but UTPA responded with a 7-0 run to lead 26-20 with nine minutes left in the half.
The Broncs extended the run and took a 38-26 lead with 4:46 left in the period, and despite Texas State finishing the frame on a 10-6 run, UTPA went to the halftime locker room up 44-36.
Texas State scored the first two baskets of the second half as Bush's jumper pulled the `Cats within four at 44-40, but Texas State scored only two points over the next six minutes, falling behind 49-42 with 15:30 left in the game.
UTPA's lead grew to double digits at 58-48 with 9:49 to play on a Kano Edwards lay-up, and the Broncs would eventually lead by as many as 19 en route to the 79-62 win.
The Broncs put three players in double digits, led by Colin Lein's 15 points, 14 of which came in the first half. Larry Sheppard and Dexter Shankle each scored 12 in the UTPA win.
Texas State returns to the floor in San Marcos Thursday, when the `Cats entertain Stephen F. Austin in a Southland Conference battle slated for 7 p.m. at Strahan Coliseum.
