Bobcat Spikers Fall After Strong Start In Waco

SAN MARCOS - Texas State took an early one-game advantage Tuesday night in Waco, but Baylor came storming back to claim a 3-1 match win over the Bobcats at the Ferrell Center.

Baylor (5-0, 0-0 Big 12) scored the first point in each of the match's four games on the way to the 3-1 win.

Texas State (1-3, 0-0 SLC) jumped out to a 17-10 lead in game one after trailing early, but the lead was trimmed to one following a 13-7 run that cut the Bobcat lead to 24-23. Texas State scored a pair of points that prompted a Baylor time out, and after Texas State extended the lead to five, the Bears used a 4-0 run to again get within a point at 28-27.

The two teams traded scores until the deciding point in game one, as Stephanie Bruggeman recorded a kill with an assist from Christina Melvin to give the Bobcats a 30-28 game-one win and a 1-0 lead in the match.

Game two started out neck-in-neck, with Baylor claiming the first point, followed by a 10-10 tie which came before an 8-3 run that put the Bears in front 18-13. Baylor later extended the lead to 21-15 and ended the game on a 9-4 spurt to claim a 30-19 win in game two, tying the match at one game a piece.

Texas State hit just .082 in the second game, compared to a .216 percentage in game one.

Game three saw the Bears take a commanding lead, starting with three consecutive points to begin the game, which turned into a 10-4 lead in the game's early goings. Texas State was able to cut the Baylor lead to 13-10 and later 15-13, but Baylor again extended its lead to 17-13 with a pair of quick points.

Texas State made a second run, tying the game at 20-20, and the Bobcats took their first lead at 22-21, but Baylor finished on a 9-6 clip to end the game with at 30-28, giving Baylor a 2-1 match advantage.

In the fourth and decisive match, Baylor took hold of an early 6-2 lead, and extended it to 15-8 at the midway point of game four. Baylor outscored Texas State 15-9 to end the final game, taking a 30-17 fourth-game victory and a 3-1 decision in the match.

Bruggeman notched her first career double-double for the Bobcats, stinging 13 kills and recording ten digs, while Melvin's 24 set assists led the team on the night. Karry Griffin tallied 11 digs defensively for the Bobcats, and the junior middle blocker's six stuffs were also a team high in the match.

Baylor had two players reach double-digit kills, as Nicole LeBlanc registered 21 and Stella Odion chipped in 19 in the win. Emily Huston had 52 assists from the setting position for Baylor, while five players had double-digit digs, led by Kristen Schramek's 22. Amanda Modglin led the Bears in blocks with ten.

Texas State's next action will come at Arizona State, as the Bobcats compete in the Wyndham Buttes Sun Devil Classic at Wells Fargo Arena in Tempe, Ariz. The tournament completes a four-game road swing before the `Cats return home to Strahan Coliseum for their SLC-opener against Texas-San Antonio on Sept. 13.
