Volleyball Downed 3-0 In SLC Road Opener

HUNTSVILLE - Sam Houston State had three players reach double-digit kills while holding Texas State to a .113 hitting percentage, as the Bobcats dropped three straight games (23-30, 24-30, 20-30) Tuesday at Johnson Coliseum in Huntsville.

Texas State (3-7, 2-1 SLC) was bumped from a four-way tie for first in the loss, while Sam Houston (5-6, 3-0 SLC) remained atop the SLC standings with the win.

The first game started with a Texas State attack error that gave Sam Houston a 1-0 lead, but the Bobcats stormed back and eventually took a 6-4 lead on Lawrencia Brown's second kill of the game. The game remained back-and-forth until a Bearkat rally made the score 21-16, and the Bobcats were unable to overcome the f deficit, falling 30-23 to open the match down 0-1.

Game two began with Sam Houston taking the first two points, but Texas State was again able to take back the lead after falling behind early to begin the game. The Bobcats extended their lead to 10-6, but again Sam Houston State went on a scoring tear, reeling of ten unanswered to take a 16-10 lead in the game.

Texas State made an effort at a second comeback, but the Bobcats were only able to shave the Sam Houston lead to four (28-24) before the Bearkats put the game away with a 30-24 win and secure a 2-0 lead in the match.

Game three looked almost identical to the first two, as the teams battled to a 10-10 tie before Sam Houston went on a 12-3 run to take a 22-13 lead. Sam Houston kept the heat on and outscored Texas State 8-7 to finish the game with a 30-20 win, which also resulted in the third shut-out loss suffered this season by the Bobcats.

Elizabeth Nwoke led the offensive charge for Texas State with 13 kills, while Brandy St. Francis came up with three blocks in the `Cats first SLC loss of the season. Amy Ramirez led the Bobcat defensive effort with 17 digs.

Texas State is next in action Friday, when the Bobcats travel to Beaumont to take on Lamar in the first of two weekend road matches. The `Cats and Cardinals do battle at 7:30 p.m. Friday, and Texas State travels to Lake Charles, La., Saturday for a 4 p.m. first serve at McNeese State.
