'Cats Scratched In Four By Hosting Sun Devils

Tempe, Ariz. - Elizabeth Nwoke had 16 kills to go along with Stephanie Bruggeman's 13, as the Bobcats lost their sixth straight match, 3-1, to Arizona State in the Wyndham Buttes Sun Devil Classic.

Texas State (1-6, 0-0 SLC) fell behind early in game one, as Arizona State (4-4, 0-0 Pac-10) opened a 10-3 lead and extended it to 15-5 midway through the match's first frame. The Sun Devils finished on a 15-10 run, taking game one 30-15 and grabbing a 1-0 match lead.

The Bobcats made things interesting in game two, trailing 15-13 at the midway point and cutting the lead to one at 20-19, but the Sun Devils outscored Texas State 10-6 to close game two with a 30-24 win and a 2-0 advantage in the match.

Texas State was able to get a win in game three of the four-game match, jumping out to a 10-8 lead early in the game. Arizona State tied the game at 16-16, and Texas State used a 14-5 run to finish the game, notching a 30-21 win and pulling with in one in the match at 2-1.

The Bobcats were closed out in a close game four, despite grabbing a 12-10 lead early in the game. Arizona State took the lead at 16-15, and would not trail again, finishing on a 14-10 clip to win the game 30-25 and the match 3-1.

Texas State was led statistically by Nwoke's 16 kills along with Bruggeman's 13, and Bruggeman carded her second collegiate double-double by adding 11 digs in the contest. Nwoke also nailed down a double-double with her 11 digs in the match.

Karry Griffin and Danna Melito led the Bobcats defensively with 13 digs each, and Griffin's six blocks were good for a team-high as well.

The loss drops Texas State to 1-6 on the season, and the Bobcats will open Southland play on Tuesday with a 7 pm match with Texas-San Antonio at Strahan Coliseum.
