Box Score

HAMMOND, La. - Two runs scored early in the game was all No. 2 seed Sam Houston State (28-23) needed as the Bearkats edged third-seed Texas State (26-26) for a 2-1 victory in the second round of the 2005 Southland Conference Softball Tournament Saturday afternoon at North Oak Park in Hammond, La.

Texas State took a 1-0 lead early in the game as Jill Kloesel scored on a wild pitch by SHSU freshman pitcher Shalayne Blythe in the top of the second frame. However, that would be the lone run scored for the Bobcats despite efforts by the Texas State squad to place players in scoring position the remainder of the game.

The Bearkats would tie things up and then take a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third when Crissy Dielo singled to left field and scored Sweaney, who had doubled to left field earlier. Erin Lindsey reached on a fielder's choice and Boone crossed home plate before Dielo was tagged for the final out while trying to reach third.

Blythe picked up her 13th win as she struck out seven batters the entire game while Texas State's Katie Ann Trahan got the loss as she gave up two runs on three hits and struck out nine.

Sam Houston will meet top seed Texas-San Antonio later this evening at 6 p.m. in an elimination showdown between the top two seeded teams.  Texas State plays the next game, its second straight of the day, against No. 6 seed McNeese State. The winner moves on to the next round while the loser heads home.
