HAMMOND, La. - Third-seed Texas State capitalized on a wild pitch by Northwestern State pitcher Loni Rasberry in the opening frame to take a hard-fought 1-0 victory and advance at the Southland Conference Tournament in Hammond.
Texas State advances in the winner's bracket to face the No. 2 seed Sam Houston State on Saturday, May 7, at 1:30 p.m. The Bobcats improve to 26-25 on the season while fourth seed Northwestern State will face top seed and defending champion Texas-San Antonio at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
Bobcat second baseman Ashley Wilson reached on a walk and scored the lone Texas State run when Rasberry threw a wild pitch that allowed Katie Ann Trahan to advance to second and Wilson to cross home plate for the 1-0 advantage.
Both teams had scoring opportunities the remainder of the game, but neither was able to follow through as Texas State stranded five while Northwestern State left four on base.
Trahan earned the win (22-17) as she struck out nine batters and gave up only two hits. Rasberry took the loss, giving up two hits, one run, one error and striking out seven.
