BEAUMONT -
Lamar used a pair of book-end three-run innings to knock off Texas State 7-6 Saturday at Vincent-Beck Stadium in the regular-season finale for both teams.
Lamar (35-24, 16-11 SLC) jumped out to an early 3-0 lead when Adrian Cantu singled home Michel Ambort, and scored on Collin Delome's two-run home run in the bottom of the first.
Texas State (32-24, 15-12 SLC) took control of the game's middle innings, beginning with the top of the third, when Kyle Jones tripled to score Jose Rodriguez and later scored on Dawid Bednarek's RBI single, making the score 3-2.
The Bobcats added to the lead in the fifth, when Nolan Mast scored on a wild pitch, followed by a sacrifice squeeze by Jones that scored Kyle Anson from third.
Leading 4-3 in the sixth, Bednarek led off with a double to left center. Dominic Ramos came to the plate and belted a ball deep to left-center field that climbed over the wall for the senior shortstop's second home run of the season, giving the `Cats a 6-3 lead heading to the bottom of the fifth.
The `Cats held Lamar off of the scoreboard until the eighth, when the Cardinals plated one run on Delome's third RBI of the game, a single up the middle that scored Ambort from third.
Lamar's second three-run inning came in the bottom of the ninth, beginning with two walks and a bunt fielder's choice to load the bases. A B.J. Boening wild pitch plated the first Cardinal run of the inning, and after an intentional walk to Ambort, Cantu ripped a single down the right field line to score the tying and winning runs for Lamar in the 7-6 Cardinal win.
The two teams combined to use ten pitchers in the game, four for Lamar and six for Texas State. Chuckie Platt got the win for the Cardinals, improving to 3-0 on the season, while Boening took his second loss of the series, dropping his record to 1-3 on the year.
Bobcat starter Ryan Bennett went just one inning, while Tyler Bryant pitched four shut-out innings with four strike outs for the `Cats. Texas State did use Scott Moore in relief, as the junior right-hander went 2.2 innings with no hits and one earned run.
Cassidy Dresch went two-for-four on the day for the Bobcats, while Jones was two-for-four with two RBIs and a run scored. Dawid Bednarek had another banner day for the Bobcats, driving in a run and scoring once in a three-for-four day at the plate. Ramos picked up a pair of RBIs on his second long ball of the year, his only hit in the game.
