Bobcats Turned Back In Dramatic Ninth At Lamar

BEAUMONT - Lamar pounded out ten hits and scored in four separate innings in a 4-3 win over Texas State Thursday at Vincent-Beck Stadium.

Lamar (34-20, 15-10 SLC) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Matt Lambeth scored on an Adrian Cantu single through the left side in the first inning.

Texas State (31-23, 14-11 SLC) answered the run in the top of the third, when Heath Keel scored on a Dawid Bednarek sacrifice fly, but Lamar regained the lead in the bottom of the inning when Lambeth again scored on a Cantu RBI single, this time to right field, giving the Cardinals a 2-1 lead through three innings.

Lambeth scored his third run of the ballgame in the fifth, and again the RBI came on a single into right for Cantu, giving the Cardinals a two-run lead after five complete.

Texas State stayed in striking distance, and in the top of the eight, the `Cats got a two-out RBI double from Kyle Anson that tied the game by plating Dominic Ramos and Nolan Mast. Mast and Ramos were on second and third after Ramos walked and Mast singled, which was followed by a Lamar wild pitch.

Tied at 3-3, Texas State kept Lamar off of the scoreboard in the bottom of the eighth, while the Cardinals shut down the Bobcats in the ninth to remain tied heading into the game's final half inning.

After a walk and a pair of bunt singles, Lamar's Will Henderson chipped a grounder out in front of the plate which was fielded by Bednarek. The Bobcat catcher dove toward the plate, but Collin Delome was called safe at home plate, giving the Cardinals the 4-3 win in a dramatic ninth-inning finish.

Both starters pitched well in no-decisions, as Texas State's Chris Jean gave up three runs on eight hits in 7.2 innings pitched, while William Delage also went 7.2 innings with three given up. Just two of Delage's runs were earned, while all three of Jean's went earned.

Steve McFarland got the win in relief for Lamar, moving his record to 7-2 on the year, while Bobcat reliever B.J. Boening took the loss and fell to 1-2 on the season.

Mast and Anson each recorded two hits, as each went two-for-four on the night. Anson had two RBIs in the game, while Mast scored one run. Ramos and Keel had the other runs scored for Texas State, while Bednarek had the `Cats' third RBI in the game.

Lambeth went two-for-three with three runs scored for the Cardinals, while Adrian Cantu drove in a pair of runs in the win for Lamar.
