SAN MARCOS -
For the second straight day, Nolan Mast went three-for-five at the plate, and the senior second baseman drove in three runs as the Bobcats knocked down McNeese State 5-1 Saturday at Bobcat Field.
Texas State (31-20, 14-9 SLC) first reached the scoreboard in the third inning, as Mast smashed a double down the right field line with Dawid Bednarek at second and Dominic Ramos at first. Bednarek would score from second and Ramos from first, giving Mast his first two RBIs of the day. Kyle Anson, the `Cats next hitter, ripped a single in to right center bringing Mast around from second, giving the Bobcats a 3-0 lead after three complete.
The Bobcats added two more in the sixth, when Ramos singled home Cassidy Dresch, followed by Mast's third RBI of the day on a single up the middle that plated Ramos.
McNeese State (20-30, 9-14 SLC) got its only run of the game in the eighth inning, when second baseman Chad Carnahan belted a solo home run over the left field wall off of B.J. Boening to make the score 5-1.
Mast and Kyle Jones had the only multi-hit outings for the `Cats, as Mast was three-for-five with three RBIs and a run scored, while Jones went two-for-four on the day. Ramos and Anson also checked in with RBIs for the Bobcats, and all seven Texas State hits came from the top four spots in the order.
Chris Jean went seven innings for Texas State, giving up no runs and only four hits while striking out five, and the combination of Boening and Chris Hill closed out the game's final two innings in the Texas State win. Boening gave up one run on one hit in the eighth, while Hill retired the side in order to shut down the top of the ninth.
Jean worked out of two jams in the ballgame, as he retired three straight hitters with runners at the corners in the first and got out of a bases-loaded spot in the sixth on the way to the win.
Jean's record moved to 7-4 on the year, while McNeese State starting pitcher Cameron Chandler picked up the loss, pitching five innings, giving up four runs on four hits with six walks. The Cowboy loss dropped Chandler's record to 3-8 on the season.
