SAN MARCOS - Texas-Arlington junior Jill Garro tossed a three-hit shutout as the Lady Mavericks earned the 3-0 victory in the first game of a Southland Conference doubleheader sweep against Texas State Saturday. UTA then used a season-high 11 hits and strong pitching from Garro and Nicki Wilson as it handed the Bobcats a 6-3 loss in the nightcap.
The sweep drops Texas State's overall record to 20-21 and 14-6 in the SLC. UTA is now 14-21 and 10-10.
In game two, UTA jumped in front early, scoring one run in each of the first three innings.
Dee Jay Nelson hit a two-run homer in the fifth to give the Lady Mavs a 5-0 advantage. Nelson went 3-for-4 with three RBI.
Katie Ann Trahan drove in the Bobcats' first two runs of the game with a single through the middle in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring Amy Hromadka and Kristin Gunter to cut UTA's lead to 5-2.
Holly Britain opened the Texas State sixth with a single to right and Ashton Peters followed with a pinch-hit double to left center. Leslie Sharp drew a walk from UTA reliever Wilson. Britain would score when Gunter flied out to left.
The Lady Mavericks added a run in the seventh with a two-out rally.
Ashley Wilson managed a two-out double in the seventh, but Nicki Wilson retired Britain to close out the game.
For the day, Garro (9-11) allowed nine hits and three runs (two earned), recording two straight wins over the 'Cats. Nicki Wilson tossed two innings of one-hit relief for UTA.
Trahan (17-15) was tagged with the loss of game one, allowing three runs (one earned) on eight hits. Sarah Lancour recorded her second loss of the season in the nightcap giving up six runs (five earned) on 11 hits.
Texas State will be on the road at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi for a doubleheader Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 pm at Islander Field.
