Kyle Anson had two RBIs and Chris Hill pitched two perfect innings as the Bobcats downed Southeastern Louisiana 6-4 Saturday at Alumni Field.
Texas State (29-18, 12-8 SLC) took an early lead in the third, when Heath Keel scored on a Dominic Ramos sacrifice fly, but the Lions answered quickly, evening the score in the bottom of the third when Tony Suarez scored on a Dawid Bednarek throwing error.
The Bobcats got another run in the fourth, when Kyle Jones scored on a bases-loaded wild pitch, which followed a 79-minute mid-inning rain delay. Texas State held Southeastern Louisiana (21-24, 9-11 SLC) scoreless in the bottom of the fourth, and the Bobcats led 2-1 through four complete innings.
In the fifth, the Bobcats put runners at first and second with one out, and Anson laced a single into left center, scoring Ramos from third base, while Nolan Mast advanced to third on the hit. Jones followed the base hit with an RBI ground-out, giving the Bobcats a three-run lead heading to the bottom of the fifth.
The Lion fifth saw the first two Southeastern batters reach base, and a Randy Roth single to center brought home Steve Clevenger, while a throwing error by Mast on the same play scored Kyle Ginn, cutting the Bobcat lead to one run after five innings.
After holding the `Cats scoreless in the top of the sixth, Southeastern tied the game in the bottom of the sixth with Ginn's solo shot over the left field wall.
The game stayed tied until the top of the ninth, when with the bases loaded and one out, Anson was hit by a pitch to snap the 4-4 tie, and Ramos later scored on a wild pitch, giving the Bobcats a 6-4 lead into the game's final half inning.
Hill sat the Lions in order to cap a perfect two innings pitched, and the junior right-hander picked up his second win of the year, pushing his record to 2-1. Chad Pendarvis pitched only a third of an inning for Southeastern, but gave up the two ninth inning runs to card the loss, dropping his record to 4-2 on the year.
Anson's two RBIs led the Bobcats, and the senior third baseman was one of eight Texas State batters with a base hit on the day, going one-for-four at the plate. Ramos had an RBI and two runs scored, going one-for-three, while Jones was one-for-five with an RBI and a run scored in the game.
Texas State and Southeastern Louisiana will conclude the series Sunday, with first pitch in the rubber match slated for 1 p.m., at Alumni Field in Hammond.
