Southeastern Bats Sink Texas State In Series Opener

HAMMOND, La. - Southeastern Louisiana used a four-hit, five-run second inning, and Bernard Robert tossed a three-run complete game as the Lions turned back the Bobcats 10-3 Friday night at Alumni Field.

Southeastern Louisiana (21-23, 9-10 SLC) opened scoring in the second, beginning with a double and a pair of hit batsmen. With the bases loaded, Trent Hebert singled down the right field line to score a run, followed by a John Greenwich RBI sacrifice fly. The Lions got two more runs on a Gary Duhe single and capped the inning with Kyle Ginn's RBI rip into center.

The Lions added two more in the third on Ryan Spencer's two-run home run, and Southeastern Louisiana led 7-0 through three innings of play.

Texas State (28-18, 11-8 SLC) got on the board in the fourth, as Luke Cannon singled home Kyle Jones, and Cassidy Dresch brought home Elliott Babcock with an RBI single.

The Bobcats cut the Lion lead to four in the fifth inning, when Kyle Anson brought home Dominic Ramos with a sac fly to left.

Southeastern got the run back in the home half of the sixth, as Tony Suarez hit a solo home run to left center, making the score 8-3. The Lions topped off the night in the eighth, using singles from Ginn and Steve Clevenger to score two runs and hand the Bobcats their first loss in five trips to the ballpark.

Robert pitched all nine innings for the Lions, giving up three runs on seven hits, while notching five strike outs on the night. The win moved Robert's record to 6-4 on the season. The Bobcat loss was credited to Scott Moore, who went seven innings, giving up eight runs on eight hits, while striking out seven. His record fell to 4-4 on the year. Tyler Bryant also tossed an inning for the `Cats, allowing three hits and a pair of Southeastern runs.

Ramos and Dresch were the only Bobcats with more than one hit, as Ramos went three-for-five with a run scored, while Dresch was two-for-four at the plate with an RBI. Anson and Cannon brought home the other two RBIs on the night for the Bobcats, and Anson pushed his team-leading RBI total to 44 with his fifth-inning sacrifice fly.

For Southeastern, five hitters had multi-hit games, including each of the Lions' top four hitters in the lineup. Clevenger had the biggest night for the Lions, going three-for-five at the plate with an RBI, while Duhe, Ginn and Spencer each carded a pair of RBIs on the night.

The Bobcats will try to even the series on Saturday, as Chris Jean takes the hill to face Southeastern's Jeremy Mizell. Saturday's first pitch is set for 3 p.m., at Alumni Field in Hammond.
