Final Stats
SAN MARCOS -
Texas State banged out 11 hits and scored 11 runs en route to an eight-inning 11-1 victory over Sam Houston State Saturday at Bobcat Field.
In addition to putting up double-digit hit totals for the second straight day, Texas State (26-17, 10-7 SLC) took advantage of six Bearkat errors on the way to the run-rule win.
The Bobcats got things started early, as Dominic Ramos slipped a lead-off single into left field, and moved to third on a failed-pick-off throwing error by Sam Houston pitcher Jesse Marshall. As Ramos rounded third on the play Bearkat shortstop Jose Salazar had a chance to knock down the out at home, but threw the ball away enabling Ramos to score on the pair of errant throws.
Texas State got on the board again in the third, as Kyle Anson laced a ground ball through the middle to score Ramos and Mast, giving the Bobcats a 3-0 lead through three innings.
The Bobcats' big inning came in the fourth, beginning with a Heath Keel double, which was followed by a Cassidy Dresch walk with no outs. Dawid Bednarek then put down an attempted sacrifice bunt, but another throwing error by Marshall put Bednarek on third, plating Keel and Dresch. With Bednarek at third, Mast came to the plate and was hit by the first pitch in the at bat, putting runners at the corners for Anson and only one out.
Anson jumped on the third pitch in the at bat, smashing it over the right field wall for a three-run home run, his sixth of the season. In all, the Bobcats scored five in the fourth and had a 9-0 lead heading to the top of the fifth.
Sam Houston State (14-25-2, 6-11 SLC) was able to get on the board in the seventh, scoring on Roy Merritt's RBI single to center. The seventh-inning Bearkat run was the only run given up by Bobcat starter Chris Jean.
Up eight through seven and a half innings played, Texas State began the eighth with singles by Ramos and Anson, and the pair moved up a base each on a Cody Ross ground out. With Ramos at third and Anson at second, Jose Rodriguez belted a single through the left side of the infield, scoring both Anson and Ramos to end the ballgame. It was the second straight day that Rodriguez drove in Anson to win for the `Cats.
Offensively, Anson stole the show for the `Cats, going three-for-five with five RBIs, three runs scored and a home run, while Rodriguez also turned in a three-for-five day with two RBIs. Ramos was the other Bobcat batter with a multi-hit game, going three-for-four with three runs scored.
Jean got the win for the Bobcats, striking out four and allowing just six hits, while pushing his record to 6-4 on the season. Jean's eight innings pitched gave the Bobcat senior his first complete game of the season. Marshall took the loss for the Bearkats, dropping his record to 4-1 on the year.
Texas State and Sam Houston will play the series finale Sunday at Bobcat Field, with first pitch slated for 1 p.m. The game can be heard live on KTSW, 89.9 FM, as well as world-wide on the Internet through College Sports Pass at www.txstatebobcats.com.
