NATCHITOCHES, La. - Senior Ashley Wilson hit two home runs includings a game-winning grand slam, in the fifth inning of Texas State softball's (18-19, 12-4) as the Bobcats swept a double-header from the Demons, 6-2 and 6-3 Saturday. With the sweep at Demon Diamond, the Bobcats took over first place in the Southland Conference standings. The series will conclude Sunday with a single game at 1:00 p.m.
Katie Ann Trahan picked up her 15th win and first save of the season with three innings of relief work in the nightcap against NSU. In ten innings, Trahan only allowed two runs on ten hits. She struck out 20 and did not walk a batter.
In game one, Wilson first hit a solo home run in the second inning to get Texas State on the board. Holly Britain hit her fifth home run of the season, one out later for a 2-0 Bobcat lead against Loni Rasberry (15-5).
Northwestern State tied the game 2-2 in the third when Sarina Noack singled and scored on a Nicole Martin double, and Shay Hunt singled driving in Martin.
In the second game, Rachael Bonnetti's two-run single in the first put the Bobcats up to stay.
Demon right fielder Margaret Patterson cut the margin in half in the bottom of the first with an RBI single to score Noack.
Amy Krueger and Trahan each drove in runs to give Texas State a 4-1 lead in the third. Center fielder Amy Hromadka reached on a bunt single and scored on Krueger's double to left center. Trahan drove in Krueger with single into center field.
Amanda Glenn led off the fourth with a home run for NSU, but the Bobcats put up two more runs in the top of the fifth. Bonetti added a run on an error by the Northwestern State catcher. Britain scored Texas State's sixth run of the game off the bat of Kristin Gunter.
The Lady Demons had the opportunity to tie the game in the bottom of the fifth. Singles by Martin and Patterson sandwiched around a walk to Hunt had the bases loaded. Glenn lashed a shot down the left field line that hooked foul by six feet. That blast would have tied the game, but instead,
Trahan struck out Glenn for the first out and survived an RBI single from Lyndsey Gorski by retiring the next two hitters to leave the bases loaded.
Sarah Lancour (3-1) recorded the win in the second game for the Bobcats. In four innings of action, she struck out three and only walked two. Lancour also held Northwestern State to three runs on seven hits. Michelle Castellano (6-8) took the loss for the Demons.
