Texas State Slams ULM 9-2 For SLC Series Win

MONROE, La. - Texas State used home runs from Kyle Anson and Kyle Jones, and Bobby Sawicki gave up one run in 5.1 innings as the Bobcats beat Louisiana-Monroe 9-2 Sunday at Indian Field.

Texas State (24-16, 8-7 SLC) got the bats rolling from the beginning, tallying three runs in the game's first inning. The inning started with a one-out walk for Nolan Mast, followed by a double for Anson down the right field line. With two on and one out, Jones smoked a single, scoring Mast from third and Anson from second. Jones also advanced to second on a throw to the plate. A pair of wild pitches sent Jones to third and then across the plate, making the score 3-0.

The Bobcats put up three more runs in the third inning, as Mast led off with a single, advancing to second on an error by the ULM shortstop. Anson singled Mast to third, but the Bobcat second baseman was gunned down at the plate by the Indian right fielder. With Anson at first, Jones hit his second home run in as many days with a shot over the left field wall. Jose Rodriguez followed the homer with an infield single and then stole second base. Ross nailed an RBI single into center, bringing Rodriguez in from second and making the score 6-0 through three innings.

Louisiana-Monroe (18-18, 4-11 SLC) put up its first run in the sixth on an RBI fielder's choice for Ty Rollinson, cutting the Bobcat lead to five through six complete.

Texas State continued the three-run trend in the seventh, beginning with an Anson home run that led off the inning. Elliott Babcock then reached on an error, followed by a walk drawn by Ross. With two on, Cassidy Dresch ripped a double into left, bringing home Babcock and Ross, and the Bobcats led 9-1 after six and a half innings.

UL-Monroe tried to claw back into the game, scoring a run in the eighth on an Adam Barfield RBI groundout, but Texas State's bullpen closed the door on the Indians for the 9-2 victory.

Sawicki's 5.1 innings pitched gave him the win, pushing the senior's righty's record to 4-2 on the year. B.J. Boening pitched 2.2 innings of relief, giving up one run, and Jason Baca completed the game's final inning, retiring all three batters faced in order for the second straight day.

Jones and Anson led the way offensively for the Bobcats, as Jones carded four RBIs and went two-for-five, also scoring a run, while Anson went three-for-five with one RBI and three runs scored. Dresch also had a big day for the `Cats, going three-for-five with a pair of RBIs.

Matt Lane took the loss for the Indians, dropping his record to 2-6 on the season.

Texas State will return to the diamond Tuesday, as the Bobcats travel to Texas A&M for a non-conference bout with the Aggies. First pitch is slated for 7 p.m., at Olsen Field in College Station.
