Bobcats Turn Back Texas Southern 6-1 In Mid-Week Action

SAN MARCOS - Dominic Ramos went three-for-five and Cody Ross drove in two, including his first home run of the season, as Texas State downed Texas Southern 6-1 Wednesday night at Bobcat Field.

Texas State (22-15, 6-6 SLC) got on the board early, scoring two runs in the game's first inning. Ramos led off with a triple, and Nolan Mast lifted a fly ball to right for the RBI sacrifice fly. Kyle Anson followed Mast's sac fly with a walk, and was moved to third on Kyle Jones' single to right. Elliott Babcock pushed a fly ball to left, bringing Anson home on the second RBI sacrifice of the inning.

Texas Southern (15-17-1) put its only run of the game on the scoreboard in the top of the second, scoring on an RBI ground out to third. Texas State answered the Tiger score with a run in the bottom half of the second, when Ross blasted a shot over the wall in right center, making the score 3-1.

The Bobcats added another run in the sixth when Ross reached on a throwing error, and Texas State added a pair of insurance runs in the eighth. Jose Rodriguez scored on a throwing error by the Texas Southern second baseman, and Mast nailed his second RBI sacrifice fly of the game, bringing in Luke Cannon from third to make the score 6-1.

Offensively, Ramos went three-for-five with a run scored, but Ross stole the show for the Bobcats, going one for three with two RBIs and his first home run of the season. Mast also picked up a pair of RBIs, with Babcock and Cannon driving in the remaining two runs for Texas State.

The Bobcats used six pitchers in the game, and Steven Siers (2-1) got the win, pitching two shut-out relief innings and giving up just one hit. Texas State starter Ryan Bennett pitched the game's first three innings, surrendering only two hits and the only Tiger run of the game, which was unearned. Tyler Bryant, Brady Robbins, B.J. Boening and Jason Baca each logged at least one inning of relief work in the win.

The loss was credited to Texas Southern starter Issac Daniels (3-6), who went six innings, striking out five and walking four, but giving up four Bobcat runs.

Texas State jumps back into Southland Conference play this weekend in Monroe, La., beginning Friday at 6:30 p.m. Texas State and UL-Monroe will play game two at 3 p.m., Saturday, and will conclude the series at 1 p.m., Sunday at Indian Field.
