CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Katie Ann Trahan hit a solo home run and struck out 12 batters in the complete game shutout of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The Bobcats won the first game of the twin bill 3-0, but dropped the second game 3-2 in eight innings against the Islanders.
With the split, Texas State moves to 21-22 overall on the season. With the win, Trahan picked up her fourth shutout of the season and improved her overall ERA to 2.09.
In the opener, after Trahan put the Bobcats on the board 1-0 in the fourth inning, neither team scored until the 'Cats added two runs in the final inning.
Pinch runner Jill Kloesel put the `Cats up 2-0 off of Ashley Wilson's triple to right field. Wilson then scored the final run of the game on a sacrifice bunt off the bat of third baseman Holly Britain.
In the second game, both teams matched runs in the fourth and fifth innings, notching a single run in each frame. The Bobcats scored first on a leadoff double by Britain followed by an RBI single by Kristin Gunter.
The Islanders answered in the bottom of the fourth inning when freshman Crystal Russell reached on an infield single and was driven in by Jennifer Golden who hit a double down the left field line.
In the top of the fifth, Rachael Bonetti hit a fielder's choice, sacrifice bunt to drive in Amy Hromadka, who led off the inning with a single. Hromadka reached second on an Islander error before reaching third on a wild pitch.
Brenda Guerrero led off the Islanders' half of the inning with a double to left center before scoring on a Bobcat throwing error to tie the game at two.
Michelle Petree hit a single through the left side in the bottom of the eighth to score Erica Armenta from second to lift the Islanders to the 3-2 win.
Sarah Lancour picked up the loss for the Bobcats, her third of the season. She struck out four while allowing three runs (one earned) on five hits and walking only one batter.
Texas State returns to Southland Conference actions as it travels to Nicholls State for a three-game series this weekend. The series will open with a double header scheduled with the first game scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. The final game will begin at noon on Sunday.
