Texas State Closes Out First SLC Series with Two Wins

SAN MARCOS, Texas - The Texas State softball team improved its Southland Conference record to 3-0 with two more wins against Southeastern Louisiana Sunday. The Bobcats took a 9-5 victory over the Lions in the continuation of the game postponed by rain from Saturday and followed with a 6-4 win in the final game of the series.

            Katie Ann Trahan picked up two more wins to add to her total as she is now at 8-10 on the year and gave up only six runs on 11 hits in 13.1 innings while striking out eight over the two games.

            In the first game, the Lady Lions posted two runs in the first inning, when catcher Karin Smith hit her fourth home run of the season to plate Katie Szmergalski.

            Second baseman Ashley Wilson plated two runs on a double to left field driving Kristin Gunter and Amy Krueger across the plate.  Having advanced to third on a poor throw from the outfield, Wilson put the Bobcats up 3-2 by racing home on a wild pitch.

            Texas State extended its lead 4-2 in the second, off a triple from Krueger.

            The Bobcats added a five run cushion in the third, starting with a 2 RBI single up the center from Heather Ackley.  Ashton Peters drove in Trahan for run number seven.  Krueger had her second multi-base hit of the game to left field scoring Texas State's winning run.

            SLU added three runs through the final innings, but could not overtake the Bobcats four-run lead.

            The 'Cats kicked off game three with one quick run in the first inning off the bat of Trahan.  Krueger scored her second run of the day in the third inning to give Texas State the 2-0 lead.

            Southeastern tied the score 2-2 in the fourth on a two out double from Rebecca de la Garza scoring Szmergalski and short stop Michelle Lemons.

            Lions pitcher Jessica Sander walked Trahan with the bases loaded to score Leslie Sharp at the bottom of the fourth inning.  Wilson dropped a double into center field for 2 RBI giving Krueger her fourth run of the series and Amy Hromadka her fifth.  In the sixth inning, Wilson stretched a single into the winning run with two outs on a pair of Lion errors. 

            Southeastern Louisiana threatened a come back with back-to-back home runs in the top of the seventh from Brooke Lockhart and Kelli Gautreau, before the Bobcats closed the Lions down with great defense from Danielle Vice.

            Two Bobcats, Krueger and Wilson scored three runs on four hits on Sunday, and Hromadka led the team scoring four runs on only three hits.

 

            Texas State softball will continue SLC action as they travel to Huntsville to play a three game series against Sam Houston State (8-14, 0-2).  The series will begin with a double header on Wednesday the first pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.  Thursday will conclude the series with a single game at 2:00 p.m.
