SAN MARCOS -
Texas State lost two of its three singles matches in three sets as Texas-San Antonio defeated the Bobcats 4-3 in Southland Conference tennis action Tuesday.
With the win, Texas-San Antonio improved to 5-8 and 4-1 in Southland Conference action. Texas State is now 6-9 and 3-4.
UTSA won the doubles point but with Texas State's Tina Klemenc and Sumarie Muller winning at No. 5 and No. 6 in straight sets, Tuesday's match came down to competition between the teams' top three singles players.
Texas State's No. 1 singles player Leja Sirola posted a 7-5, 6-3 win over Nadezda Rossikhina. Both Texas State's Melanie Hall at No. 2 singles and Margaret Potyrala at No. 3 won the first set of their matches but UTSA's Massiel Martinez and Barbara Mooney would have comeback wins to secure the Roadrunners' team victory.
Martinez beat Hall 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 while Mooney defeated Potyrala 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.
"After losing the doubles point, we came out strong in singles play," said Texas State coach Tory Plunkett. "But we have never beat UTSA before and I think that history came into play and began to creep into our minds as the match went along. But I thought we fought as hard as we could and I have to praise our team for their effort."
The Bobcats are off until April 2nd when they travel to Texas-Arlington. UTSA continues a three-match road swing April 2nd when the Roadrunners travel to Sam Houston State.
