McNeese State opened its match with Texas State by sweeping three doubles matches then won five of six in singles play to beat the Bobcats 6-1 Sunday.
With the win, McNeese State maintained its second place standing in the Southland Conference while improving to 10-3 and 4-1 in league play. Texas State, now 6-8 and 3-8, continues its home stand Tuesday when the Bobcats play host to rival Texas-San Antonio. Match time is 3 p.m. at the Texas State Tennis Complex.
McNeese State's Noelia Furno and Madeleine Hakansson defeated Melanie Hall and Tina Klemenc 8-4 at No. 1 doubles. At No. 2 doubles, Marina Gando and Ann Grobbelaar defeated Leja Sirola and Margaret Potyrala also by a score of 8-4.
In singles play, Furno set the tone for the Cowgirls at No. 1 with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Sirola while Magali Risoleo defeated Hall 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2 doubles. Texas State's lone win came at No. 3 singles where Margaret Potyrala defeated Urska Dobersek 6-4, 6-4.
