LAKE CHARLES, La. - The Texas State Bobcat softball team won both games of a Southland Conference double-header with McNeese State Saturday. The Bobcats won the opening game 4-3 in 10 innings then won 5-1 in the nightcap.
Katie Ann Trahan recorded her 13th win of the season, pitching a complete game in the opener for the `Cats. Sarah Lancour notched her second win in as many starts in the night cap. Lancour only allowed one run on two hits and struck out six.
In the opening game, McNeese State's Courtney Parks' solo home run in the second inning put the Cowgirls on the board first. McNeese added another run in the third on a RBI triple by Brooke Brodhead that scored Nikki Edlund giving the Cowgirls a 2-0 lead.
Texas State would come back to take a 3-2 lead in the fifth inning. Texas State's first run cam from Lauren Griffith who scored on a Cowgirl error. Amy Hromadka stretched a basehit into a triple scoring Ashton Peters and Gunter. McNeese tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom half of the inning when Rachael Phillips scored on a bases-loaded walk.
Both teams failed to score for the next four innings sending the game into extra innings. With Texas State's pinch runner Danielle Vice placed on second base, Holly Britain's ground out to third advanced Vice to third and Leslie Sharp's pinch-hit single scored Vice for what proved to be the game winning run. McNeese was unable to score in the bottom of the 10th despite having bases loaded and no outs. Trahan struck out the side to end the game.
Trahan struck out 18 while giving up five hits and three walks. Jessica Denham recorded the loss for the Cowgirls and her record fell to 1-13 overall.
In the nightcap, shortstop Sharp plated the first run for the Bobcats, scoring second baseman Ashley Wilson. Catcher Rachael Bonetti scored on a wild pitch to give the `Cats a 2-0 lead in the second inning.
Amy Krueger, Gunter and Hromadka scored single runs in the third, fourth and seventh innings respectively while McNeese's single run came in the bottom of the seventh. Tonya Edlund tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jana Jones.
With the wins, Texas State improved to 15-16 overall and 9-2 in the SLC while McNeese falls to 9-23 overall and 2-9 in the SLC. Both teams will conclude the series with a single game at 1 p.m. Sunday.
