SAN MARCOS -
Texas State banged out 11 hits and scored ten runs in its second straight Southland Conference victory over Nicholls State Saturday afternoon.
Nicholls State struck first in the top of the first with a pair of runs on Jose Higuera's two-out triple, but the Bobcats answered back in the home half of the first, thanks in part to three walks by Nicholls State starter Justin Breaux. Kyle Anson, Luke Cannon, Heath Keel and Elliott Babcock each notched RBI in the inning.
The Bobcats got back on the board in the second, plating two runs on Nolan Mast's fifth home run of the season.
Nicholls State attacked the scoreboard again in the seventh, as Bubba Bell scored on a Texas State fielding error. The Bobcats again answered the Colonel call in the bottom of the seventh, scoring another four runs. Anson blasted a two-run home run, and Jared Bunn belted an RBI single in the inning, followed by a second RBI single from Dawid Bednarek.
Mast and Anson were the only multi-hit Bobcats, as Mast went three-for-three with a home run and two RBI, while Anson went two-for-three with three RBI and a round tripper.
Texas State starter Chris Jean went 6.1 innings, striking out five to gain the win. The Bobcats used four pitchers in all, as Jarod Garza and Jason Baca logged relief innings and Scott Moore got the game's final out with the bases loaded to record his third save of the season. The win moved Jean's record to 3-2.
Breaux took the loss for Nicholls State, despite pitching just one-third of an inning. His record fell to 0-2 on the season. The Colonels dropped to 10-8 and 0-2 in the SLC, while Texas State improved to 15-8 overall and 2-0 in the Southland.
The Bobcats will go for the sweep tomorrow, with first pitch between Texas State and Nicholls State coming at 1 p.m.
