After an offensive outpouring Saturday in Corpus Christi, Texas State's bats were silenced Sunday, when the Bobcats were shut out by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
The Islanders compounded matters by striking early with six runs in the game's first two innings. Bobcat freshman and Corpus Christi native Chad Johnson got his first collegiate start, but lasted just 1.2 innings, giving up six runs on four hits to the Islanders.
A&M-Corpus Christi scored all four of its first-inning runs with two outs on a two-RBI single from Clint Galloway and a two-run home run by Josh Plumaj. The Islanders struck again in the second with two runs on a fielding error by Texas State center fielder Heath Keel.
The Islanders got on the board again in the seventh, plating one run on Jason Graham's RBI single.
A&M-Corpus Christi starter Josh Mitchell went the distance for the Islanders, striking out nine and allowing just five Bobcat hits in the complete-game shut out.
Texas State used four pitchers in the game, getting three innings of relief work from Jarod Garza, who struck out four, and 2.1 innings from Chris Hill who also fanned four Islanders at the plate.
Dominic Ramos, Nolan Mast, Keel and Cody Ross were each one-for-four at the plate, while Jose Rodriguez went one-for-three for Texas State. Jaime Landin was again hot at the plate for Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, going one-for-three at the plate with three runs scored on the day. Galloway and Plumaj also experienced success at the plate, each with a pair of RBI for the Islanders.
Johnson took the loss for the Bobcats, dropping his record to 0-1. The loss resulted in the first series loss for the Bobcats this season, and dropped Texas State to 13-7. The win improved the Islanders to 14-9-1 on the year.
