EDINBURG -
Texas-Arlington starting pitcher Jake Baxter struck out eight and gave up just two hits in eight innings of work as the Mavericks shutout Texas State 3-0 Sunday during the final day of the UTPA Classic.
The non-conference game between Southland Conference rivals left both teams at 2-1 after the first weekend of the season.
Behind the pitching of Baxter and Blake Pierson who picked up the save with four innings of relief work, the Mavericks made a two-run first inning stick. Texas State starting pitcher Bobby Sawicki walked Dane Ryan and Scott Williams before Justin Stevens singled to left field to drive in the Mavs' first run. Ryan Nelson then doubled off the left centerfield wall to plate another run.
UTA added a run in the bottom of the eighth.
After banging out 24 base hits in its first two games, the Bobcats were held to just four hits against the Mavericks.
Texas State opens at home Saturday with the first of two games against Angelo State.
